How hosting my websites with Dreamhost is working out for my writing sites after almost two years.
Gigonomics Amateur Freelancing
The local newspaper has an interesting story about what they term "gigonomics". Gigonomics is just economics with eco replaced with gig, so Gigonomics means the economics of being gig based as opposed to job based. The Denver Post is seldom cutting edge, so I’m sure the term comes from somewhere else, but it was the first time I ran across it. If you read between the lines a little bit, the article shows exactly what makes being a professional freelance writer so difficult. People with no other options cast about looking for "anything" that they can do to make money [...]
Professional Freelance Writers Only
When we started the Arctic Llama professional freelance writing blog our missions was clear, to help inform, educate, recommend, and inspire both those who hire freelance writers and those who are, or wish to become freelance writers. Over the last several months, our little blog has drifted off course with all manner of posts regarding topics not related to either the craft of freelance writing, or the business of hiring and working with freelance writers. Usually, these posts were made under the auspices that they were about things that freelance writers or business owners might be interested in, even if [...]
Why I Have To Bail On TweetSuite For Auto Tweets
Well, my experiment with automatic tweeting has been a good one. I think I am getting good results out of it, and I like both the feedback I get and the conversation that sometimes occurs. But, there is one problem. TweetSuite runs my links through TinyURL, which is fine except for the fact that I’ve come to really like tr.im because it lets me create an account and then it keeps statistics that shows how many people are actually using the links I created. I don’t get anything like that from TinyURL. So, now I need to find an Automatic [...]
Top Freelancing Blogs and ArcticLlama Is There!
So, how cool is this? The guys over at oDesk.com have published a list of the Top 100 Freelancing Blogs. Guess who is at Number 7? As a professional freelance writer, you know that your stuff gets read 100 times a day in various formats out there…somewhere. But, it is always a bit of a treat to come across something specific that lets you know that people are really reading what you write. Making it into a Top 100 List at a freelancing powerhouse like oDesk is something to take a lot of pride in. Thanks, oDesk! P.S. Turn on [...]
Demand Studios Traffic-Based Pay Writing Bonus and Contest
So, I dropped off the Demand Studios radar for a while. Between taxes and other gigs and Easter and so on, I just didn’t really have time. I stopped in earlier today and noticed that they are doing a contest / bonus promotion for their revenue share articles. Usually, I don’t go in for the whole revenue sharing thing, but I’ve got Demand Studios articles down to a science and cranking out a few more wouldn’t eat into my work time much. Add that with the $50 for every 10 revenue sharing articles you write this month and you have [...]
Privacy Policy Update Required By Google AdSense Program
The hits just keep on coming. Google’s AdSense program is introducing something called Interest Based Advertising. I haven’t looked into it in any way, and I have not idea whether it is a good thing or bad thing for webmasters who run websites and blogs, or for writers in general. However, a Google post details the updates needed for the privacy policy of sites using Google AdSense. Frankly, I would just cut and paste those three lines and change the word "your” to “the” or “our”, and call it a day. If you want to copy mine, it’s here: ArcticLlama [...]
Eye Surgery Is No Fun
For a freelance writer, eye surgery is about one of the least fun surgeries out there. Now, I’m not saying there aren’t more painful or scary surgeries (there are), just that eye surgery is particularly un-fun for a professional writer. It has always been my contention that the only people who should be professional writers are those people who love writing. I am one of them. Over the past couple of years, I’ve also grown to love designing and building websites and experimenting with the countless tools and services provided via my computer. But, as I type this, my vision [...]
Awesome Superbowl – Advice for Pittsburgh’s Coach
Ok, let me just say three things right off the bat. GREAT Superbowl – fun, fun, fun and loads of big plays. Despite #1 I lost my pool – Doh! Clock Management is a HUGE skill that seems to take lots of experience to learn. Congratulations to the World Champion Pittsburgh Steelers. It worked out for you guys this time, so no harm no foul, but there is a valuable lesson to be learned. With around 3 minutes to go and the ball on the 1 yard line, Pittsburgh threw the ball on first down. I know all about why [...]
