Colorado Periodic Report Filing

I haven’t done research about how it works in other states, but here in Colorado when you register your freelance writer Limited Liability Company, or LLC, you have to file a Colorado Periodic Report with the Colorado Secretary of State each year. If you got a tax id number for your freelance writing business, like a federal EIN, then you registered with some state.

Essentially, the periodic report requires you to update contact information about your Colorado freelance writing business each year. It’s one of those things that makes more sense for larger companies than a sole proprietor LLC, but rules are rules.

Colorado Periodic Report Email

If you do keep your contact information up to date, the Secretary of State’s office will send you an email each year reminding you of your requirement to file your business’ to file the periodic report. If not, you better put a note on your calendar, because they impose a late fee for not filing your Periodic Report on time, which is higher than the $10 you have to pay to file the periodic report.

I make sure to put a note on the Google calendar I use for my business for the following year. Thanks to electronic calendars, it’s easy to put an appointment on September 15 of the next year. In fact, if you could schedule it as a repeating, annually, appointment, and never forget.

The email that comes from the Secretary of State’s office comes as an html file which freaks out some web browsers. I guess the SOS office hasn’t heard of just including links in a standard email.

Filing Colorado Periodic Report Scams

There is a scam Colorado Periodic Report out there where someone will charge you $50, or more, to file the report for you. It is a simple form, and the fee is only $10, so never fall for the Colorado Period Report scam filing emails or offers.
